Our Sacred Meal
The Lord's Supper is one of two sacraments recognized by the United Church of Canada (the other being baptism). These are rites expressly commanded by Jesus in which the working of God in human lives is explicitly promised.
The Lord's Supper, also called Communion in our tradition, commemorates the Last Supper which Jesus shared with his disciples. During this meal, Jesus identified himself with common food elements present at that ancient freedom meal (The Passover Seder).
Bread broken and shared, wine poured out and shared, became a leading symbol of God's gracious gifts and our subsequent response as people of God's Way.
Consistent with our denominational history, non-fermented grape juice is served in place of wine with alcohol. Gluten free bread is also regularly provided as one of the bread options.
Ours is a meal of remembrance, rather than re-enactment. Consequently, the sacrament is celebrated on an occasional basis, every other month, and at special services.
Ours is an open table - all who love the Lord Jesus Christ, and seek to be disciples in The Way are welcome to partake.
