February 18 - 1:30 p.m. - FAREWELL DODIE

It is with sadness for our community - for we have lost an inspiration - but with thankfulness for her release, - after an extraordinary coping with illness - that we announce the passing of Dodie Metcalfe during the evening of Wednesday, February 15, 2012. The memorial service was held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Fort Garry United Church. If you wish to send an email response, please click here. 

February 22 - 1:30-3:30 p.m. - READING GROUP

Dianne leads this study of the Compassionate Life. This week - the group is looking Chapter 9-10. It helps if you have read the chapter (books available at FG) but the focus is on our conversation.  If you have questions or are interested call Dianne at 453-8957.

February 23 - 10:30 a.m. - READING GROUP

The Riverwood Book Group has its weekly gatherings at 10:30 a.m. at Riverwood Ctre on Pembina Highway. Discussion of the last chapter of our Congregational book - Chapter 12 - takes place  this coming Thursday. Now, if you were thinking you were compassionate enough... read on! 

February 24 - 1:00 p.m. - FUNERAL FOR MARGARET TEICHROEB

A service for this longstanding friend of FGUC will be held this coming Friday, at FGUC.  Lori S. will preside.

February 25 - 10:30 a.m. - READING GROUP

Dick's Men's Group discussion of our Fort Garry Reads book selection continues this Saturday! 

February 26 - 10:30 a.m. - WORSHIP and WORK are ONE

The Annual Meeting for the Year completed (2011) takes place this Sunday - Worship and reflection on the past year and the coming 12 months will be interwoven.  Muffins will be served at the door with your program. Annual Reports and The proposed 2012 Annual Budget are available through the church office, or at the door. 

Genesis 9:12-13 - God said, "This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth."

Psalm 25:10 - All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

1 Peter 3:18 - For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God.

Mark 1:11 - And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.

Building a Healthier Community Together

A Speakers series at Knox United Church that includes

• Vinh Huynh - Principal of Hugh John MacDonald school in central Winnipeg.  February 26.
• Shahina Siddiqui - Executive Director of the Islamic Social Services Association.  March 4.
• Bob Somers - landscape architect with the internationally recognized firm Scatliff, Millar + Murray.  March 11.
• Theresa Oswald - Minister of Health for the Province of Manitoba, one of the most challenging portfolios in any government.  March 18.

Embracing our Future: Building Renewal

FGUC is in the middle of a three part building renewal effort to upgrade ouf facility for modern congregational and community uses.

• Phase One included blueprints, foundation, electrical, ventilation, fire-safety work, and the new glass-door entrance. Thanks to tremendous support of the congregation, over a million dollars was raised without debt to achieve these ends. This phase was completed in 2010.
• Phase Two is scheduled for May of 2012. The Lower Hall ceiling and ventilation is to be completed and the Hall divided into four more meeting rooms for Adult, Child, and Community uses. Most of the money needed for this project is in hand. The project is to be completed during months with lower levels of activity (i.e. before September).
• Phase Three involves the transposition of the Upper Hall, Kitchen, Offices and Sanctuary. The central offices will be replaced by a spacious foyer. While the project has been approved in principle, a congregational vote is needed, pending the final fundraising push, to authorize the third stage.
