A Story as a Long Time Choir Member

"I have been a member of Fort Garry United Church since 1970, when my husband began teaching at the U of M,

after we moved from the U.S. to Winnipeg.  Within the next few years, I brought our two children to church for Sunday School,

and arrived at church at 10 a.m. so I could rehearse with the choir for the morning church service.

With young children attending Sunday School, several of us have had - over the years - our children pop in to watch us rehearse

or come joyfully in with their Sunday School crafts after the service, when we were hanging up our choir gowns.

It was sometimes a challenge to get the kids ready for church to be there early, especially in the wintertime when boots,

coats, hats and mitts had to be put on, then hung up when arriving at church.  As children arrived for church,

there was always friendly chatter as we hung up our coats, sharing our news from last weeks' events,

chuckling when boots came off with a thud, or flew off the wrong direction, and a polite "Excuse me" to the adults was in order.

As the children grew up, and came to Sunday School on their own, they followed in their parents' footsteps with "Good Morning!"

as coats were being hung up and hands were shaken with the door greeters.

That friendly arrival time has always been such a nice part of coming to church on a Sunday!
