Reverend Kwang Beom Cho

Minister

Reverend Kwang Beom Cho joined Fort Garry United Church as our minister in July 2023.

When he was hired Caring is the word the Search Team heard over and over from his references. We also heard of his deep spirituality, ability to solidly connect with people, and his proven record of relating to youth and providing programming. We learned he can look for solutions to difficult situations and respectfully bring resolution.

Kwang Beom came to Canada in 2007 from South Korea where he worked as a Presbyterian minister for seventeen years, obtaining Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Theology from Hanshin University. After arriving in Canada impressed with the church’s open mindedness and affirming culture he felt called to the United Church of Canada.

Reverend Cho has been heavily involved with the Prairie to Pine Regional Council and the United Church Intercultural Committee. He is realistic about the situation of small churches today but is driven to keep Fort Garry a community place of God. He is full of ideas for our future and is excited about working with the congregation to grow our church together.

Lee Stubbe

Music Director

Lee Stubbe joined FGUC as their music director in September 2025.

One of his very first formative musical experiences was listening to the lead musician at his childhood church. The musician's voice and piano playing filled the sanctuary; Lee would sit, transfixed, then go home and try to copy exactly what the musician did. Little did he know that being a church music director would become a large part of his career!

Lee's first music director position was at Wesley United Church in Regina. By this time, his music career was well underway: he was teaching piano, accompanying singers, choirs, and instrumentalists, and leading choirs. He fell in love with the job! Accompanying the congregation in song is a special joy, whether it's an old school organ hymn, a soaring heartfelt melody, or a drum-fueled bop. He treasures his role in weaving the service together with music: welcoming us in, making space for reflection and intimate prayer, sending us away inspired into action. He'll play anything from Baroque to Jeremy Dutcher, Debussy to The Beatles, hymn mash-ups and other improvisations.

And, of course, there's leading the choir. His goal is to empower the choir to do what they do best: have fun, support each other, sing confidently, and work hard learning and polishing choir pieces, whether classical, contemporary, gospel, pop, or anything under the sun.

If you want to sing, or play, there is always room for you. Lee believes firmly in facilitating a non-judgemental, queer-, trans-, and disability-affirming, loving and supportive space. Come on in!
